Frank Black is giving it straight up, no sugar. He made some timeless, music. When someone creates something it has everything to do with who they were at that time, their emotions, experiences to date, turmoils, hopes dreams aspirations hates loves. Over time those things change, sometimes it takes ten years sometimes a few months go by and you feel like a different person, maybe some would say you are a little colder, maybe some realize you are just more realistic, like you say there music is passionate, passion is driven by extreme emotions, you can't expect someone to recreate that, they can only ever create what they will at that time, when he made that music he was just making it, he had no expectations from anyone (media, fans etc) I respect him for reacting the way he does, selling out isnt getting paid for something you have done, that's what everyone gets confused about, he isnt selling out, he is making a living like the rest of us workhorses out there, dude plays (emphasis on plays) music for a living, how is that selling out, now, if he were to start writing old pixies style songs because thats what everyone wants and that would sell albums, that would be selling out, dude is way more punk rock by stcking his middle finger up and saying fuck you because all this expectation and highhorse bullshit takes the mystery away.
