Bar Review - Great Scott, Allston, MA

Bar reviews are scored on a scale from 1 to 10. 1 being the worst and 10 being the tightest.  Reviews are based on 5 criteria, all equally weighted: Can You Get Tight?, Music, Atmosphere, People, Drink Selection.

Great Scott is located at 1222 Commonwealth Ave, Allston MA 02134. There is usually a $5-$10 cover with either a DJ, live music or both, each night of the week. Day reviewed: Friday Night "The Pill" $5 Cover Dj Ken & Michael

Can You Get Tight? - 8/10

I was impressed at how fast the bar staff navigated through the masses and keept the drinks flowing at Great Scott. Even with a large crowd, I never had to wait more than a few minutes for a drink. This place falls short of a perfect score because they only accept cash. This is a big no no these days. Everyone knows the tightest nights come when you are throwing drinks on a card. No one thinks about spending the extra money, and you don't need to wait for change at the bar. More drinks + less waiting = tighter times.

Music - 9/10

The Pill is Boston's longest running dance night, celebrating their 10 year anniversary in 2007. So you know they are doing something right. The music is definitely a big part of their success. With a mix of britpop, new wave, indie rock, soul, and more there is rarely a lull in the night. The crowd even went wild for a Weezer track later in the night.

Atmosphere - 8/10

Great Scott does a pretty good job of maintaining a social environment where you can talk to friends near the bar and still get down on the dance floor or stage. The layout is pretty solid, however there are some occasions when a bigger dance floor would help.

People - 8/10

People who come to Great Scott for The Pill on Friday nights, come to have a good time. The crowd just wants to drink, dance, and get tight. I've never seen a fight or even scuffle inside or out. The downside is that the crowd is not very eclectic and can be  a little on the too-cool-for-school Allston Hipster side. But then again that's also a draw.

Drink selection - 7/10

The drink selection is pretty standard. They have the Allston "rock city" staple - 16 Oz PBR tallboys for $3. Other than that Beer and mixed drinks are about $5. The draft beer selection is fairly average as well; only a handful of selections.

Overall Score - 8.0

Friday nights at Great Scott will almost never let you down. I recommended to get there a bit before midnight, grab a couple PBR Tallboys and get out on the dance floor.

Bar Review - Middlesex, Cambridge MA

Bar reviews are scored on a scale from 1 to 10. 1 being the worst and 10 being the tightest.  Reviews are based on 5 criteria, all equally weighted: Can You Get Tight?, Music, Atmosphere, People, Drink Selection.

The Middlesex is located in Cambridge, MA. There is a $5 cover on weekends with a different DJ each night. Day reviewed: Friday Night

Can You Get Tight? - 4/10

This place has a horrendous setup for getting drinks. The bar is too small and located directly next to the bathrooms. The result is 80% of the people in the bar are gathered in one dense area all trying to either get a drink or use the bathroom. They have some wait staff on hand who will bring drinks to you throughout the club, but even the wait staff has a hard time getting through the crowd. It's not uncommon to wait 30 minutes to get a drink. Usually people get a drink and then hop back in line to finish their drink while waiting for the next one. Instead of getting tight, the night turns into an irritating quest to see how you can finagle your way into getting drinks.

Music - 7/10

The music selection at Middlesex, for the most part, is really good. The problem with the Friday night DJ is that he plays one great song after the next, but only lets the song play for about 30 seconds. While the DJ work is pretty impressive; smooth transitions, good mix of music, you see a lot of people  with the facial expression " I LOVE THIS SONG!" followed by an immediate let down as the song transitions to the next song with only hearing 1 verse and chorus, if you're lucky. The DJ has earned the nickname in the letsgettight.com circle as "DJ A.D.D."

 Atmosphere - 8/10

The Middlesex definitely has a tight atmosphere. They have a big dance floor that never dies down, plush seats and some tables if you feel like taking a break. They have 3 unisex bathrooms and keep the whole place clean and classy. They lose points because of the poor layout with the bathrooms right near the bar which causes an awful bottleneck.

People - 8/10

This place has a fairly eclectic group of people. Everything from yuppies to hipsters. Everyone seems to get along as I've never seen any fights breakout; which is pretty impressive considering the frustration that builds while trying to get a drink from the bar.

Drink selection - 6/10

This area is definitely a let down. The drink prices are pretty average to pricey for Boston. They have  a small selection of draft  beers and the usual cocktails. The one standout is the 24oz Red Stripe bottle. It's always fun to drink a giant beer, especially when you don't know when your next drink will come. The downside; the cost is $9. I know the US dollar is weak, but that is pretty steep. You can get two individual beers for the same price. Isn't buying in bulk suppose to be cheaper?

 Overall Score - 6.6

If you get to the Middlesex on a night when it's not packed, you can get a beer and dance to some tunes with little heartache. However, if you're looking for fun on a weekend, it's pretty mediocre in all aspects.
